Ryokan Mugen is simply perfect. I took my mom on a trip to visit Kyoto and wanted to give my mom an authentic Japanese style residence experience. This is exactly what I wanted. My mom is also very happy. The room and all amenities are all high quality and top notch. The style of this Roykan which is more than 160 year old definitely brought us back to time.
The host Tomen San and her husband are so kind and helpful. They are God given gifts to any guests who visit Kyoto area. Tome San was very attentive to guests and showed such respects to my mom. She also helped on making reservation with good local restaurants and introduced hidden attractions not frequented by regular tourists. One more thing, she prepared great Japanese breakfast. She speaks perfect English and make life so much easier. Her husband is also kind to make sure we hit the right direction when we went out.
Overall the stay is fantastic and I highly recommend her place. This place only has 4 rooms so that you will definitely get inner peace. Perfect for couples or a family.

This Ryokan is a hidden gem in Kyoto. It’s located in a residential neighborhood, but with easy access to all the tourist locations around Kyoto. More importantly, it has a network of incredible locally-operated restaurants, bars, and shops.
By far the highlight are the owners — a husband and wife who operate the Ryokan. Tome made our trip so special, and basically crafted our itinerary by detailing her favorite spots on a physical map. She directed us to craft beer breweries, wine bars, cafes, and lesser-known shrines (in addition to her local restaurant map, and speakeasy out of the back with a lovely selection of whiskey as others note).
Would recommend this as the quintessential Kyoto experience to anyone visiting.
