This place was completely magical, I loved it! OK, it helped that we had gorgeous Spring weather (but you can purchase weather insurance against the possibility of rain, and I bet it would still be pretty neat in imperfect weather). It is amazing that you can get to someplace that feels so far away and yet so close to the middle of NYC, with nature around you and the skyline in the background. The accommodations were exactly what we wanted, and they even offer different levels available to match your inclination to rough it (though none of them are very rough, this is glamping after all). We enjoyed walking all around the island, with gorgeous views, great plantings, historical buildings, very active bird population, majestic trees, and picnicking lawns… We enjoyed having free drinks and s'mores by the Collective campfire before retiring to our tent. Cannot recommend more. Only thing to be aware of is that NY harbor can be noisy — they supply you earplugs for when it comes time to sleep, so you don't hear the helicopters going to the Wall Street helipad.
I recently stayed at the Collective Retreat on Governors Island for one night. I worked with their group events team to host an event for around 10 people, and we stayed overnight through the next morning. I have nothing but good things to say about the entire experience. Please note that this is a traditional glamping experience, meaning that these are legitimate tents located on a vast greenspace on Governors Island. The views of Manhattan, New Jersey, and the Statue of Liberty are some of the best around, and the entire retreat is very well-maintained.
I personally worked with the Retreat's event team leading up to the weekend, and they were flexible, accommodating, and organized. Matt helped the group's vision come to life, and Chelsea helped solve all the details. One month before the event, Matt met us on the Island (before it had opened) to do a final walkthrough – a very thoughtful and diligent gesture!
Compared to previous glamping experiences, the tents were exceptional and thoughtfully designed. They were generally quite spacious (our group stayed in Journey King tents) and even had an 'airlock' section that you could first enter, zip the outside-facing flap shut, before opening the flap to the inside of the tent. Each bed came equipped with a remote-controlled 'bed heater. ' Additionally, each tent had an effective heating/cooling system.

Collective Retreats on Governor's Island promised a luxurious escape, but the reality fell far short. The high price tag did not match the experience. Our woes began the moment we disembarked from the ferry. The promised Collective Retreat golf cart pickup was nowhere to be found despite ongoing communication with the phone number provided. We did get picked up by another golf cart which was owned and operated by NY Waterway. Unfortunately, upon arriving at the Retreat, the golf cart was not permitted so we had to lug our luggage through gravel to the concierge.
In spite of this mishap, the location held promise — near the water with a view of the Statue of Liberty and the NY skyline. However, the retreat itself felt somewhat neglected. Large machinery, like a construction zone, loomed behind, and wafts of unpleasant smells most likely from garbage permeated the air near the restaurant. While clean for an outdoor setting, the tent lacked the glamorous feel portrayed in Collective Retreat’s online imagery.
Upon check-in, a crucial detail emerged — an Electric Dance Music festival was happening all weekend on Governors Island. Last night, the music was still going until 1:45 am. While the Retreat offered earplugs, this information, absent during booking, would have prompted a reschedule. When booking so far in advance, this festival was not yet advertised to the public.
The amenities were questionable.
