Booked my stay here at the Ramada Hotel. Have to say very very good staff. Friendly as can be and very very helpful. Rodney especially is such an amazing man. It doesn’t matter if u need help now or later, he is happy to help whenever. He is great! So far a happy stay.

It's getting one star for the staff and one star for the location. But overall this place is pretty bad. The room was not like any of the photos and it is in serious need of a deep cleaning and upgrades. See attached photos of the tiny and stained shower. I could not even wash my hair without an arm on the wall and one hanging out of the shower and I'm not a big girl I'm 5'3" and weigh 135 pounds to give you context. There was the previous guests hair and pubic hair in both the shower and the sink and when I asked for a different room I was told they are fully booked and could possibly switch on Wednesday (the day I checked out). The doors are all cracked and bubbled paint everywhere. The 100 year old elevator needs to be updated. It's slow and a safety hazard regardless of how exciting it was in 1913. I would not choose to stay here again regardless of the price or location.

Service desk was full o nice people. Parking was frustrating. You had to wait too long for then to get your car. Elevators fit 3 and only one worked so I climbed the stairs every day. The restaurant was ehh. Rooms clean and bed comfortable. Ear plugs are on your bed. First clue that it was noisy. I think it's a good place for 20 year old folks only.

Large hotel conveniently placed in down town. Staff were as kind as any motel or hotel. There is no parking and Valet is expensive per day. There is a nice terrace on the roof with a great view, tables and chairs. There are 2 elevators but only one was working for our stay. They are "vintage" sliding grate door elevators that hold 4 people max at a time and move slowly. With only one working this made for long waits and many walks up and down the stairs, with luggage at times. The TV didn't work in our room and when we called the front desk they sent up a security personnel to fix it. He was nice but clearly knew nothing about the working of their Direct TV system or the TVs and remotes themselves as he just kept unplugging different things and plugging them back in. We were in town to see a show that was in town. Getting ready for the show we realized our hair dryer didn't work, called the desk and they said they'd send an Engineer. 15min later no one showed up and we called again they said they'd call again and send some one right away. 15 more minutes and we had to leave wet hair and all to barely make the show in time. All in all it seemed like a larg, more expensive, chain motel stay.

Personally I did not find this hotel charming at all. The room I was initially given was small and I do not believe the bed was a queen as advertised. The shower was so small you could barely turn around. Lots of mold around the shower, sink was a slow drain and smelled. Noise from the bar next bar extremely loud and continued well into the night. After 3 request, we were given a different room. Slightly bigger bathroom and bed which made the stay durable. Only 2 elevators. One stayed out of order for the entire 5 days of the trip. Waits for service were often 15 to 20 minutes. Front desk staff could be more helpful and courteous. Good location to convention center and tons restaurants in the Gaslamp District. A.

Perfect location to all things downtown. Super close to the airport. It's a old, like 100 odd years old hotel but maintained decently. Good for short stays and proximity to city center. 24 hour restaurant is a great add on.

Great price /location. Older hotel, not much more than that. Great staff, very helpful and friendly. Nice rooftop area. The connected restaurant is the best. Not the nicest place you'll ever stay @ but for the $ its the best value in the gaslamp district.

Outdated and poorly cared for little room bathroom almost unusable for the small space.

Came here for st patties and the staff was nothing but rude. Was not allowed access even after showing a key to yet they claim to know every single dude that walked in past us. Not allowed to order food At their conjoining restaurant either. Attempted to voice our disconcern of treatment and she just cut us off as we spoke. Completely unprofessional id advise to never come here.

Very charming boutique hotel. The rooms are on the small side, but I don't spend much time in my hotel awake when I'm traveling. There is a great 24-hour American style restaurant attached. They offer 24-hour room service and valet parking for a fee. And you have to ride the elevator. It's original to the building, dating from the 1910's, and still works!

Taking drinks from the bar up to the roof at night was romantic watching the city scape. The room was more spacious than I expected for a historical building. Reading reviews I saw a lot of complaints about the elevators. I found them charming reminding me of being in France a couple of years ago. The staff was young a friendly. The location is perfect we only had to use public transportation to and from the airport. Walked everywhere else without any issues.

The hotel is in an old building so there are some things that are not at all good as the elevator that lasts years to climb every floor. The room is small and of old style but it is very comfortable. They could improve a few things. The location is amazing. I'll give you a 7 out of 10.

Quaint old hotel. Used to be the tallest building in San Diego, but that was a long time ago. You can look at it as two ways, threadbare or charming. The rooms are comfy and it's in the heart of the Gaslamp district. It shows its age, but in a good way. Rooftop patio is great viewing. Restaurant attached open 24 hours. 8 min walk to convention center. Friendly staff.

This hotel has so much Beauty engraved into it, the bathrooms at first looked a little ugly until you start seeing how the tub and tiles give it depth. Also want to add this young man by the name of Jarrett I believe was very kind hearted and always willing to help, he speaks in such a calm tone and carries himself well which really helped me love the environment of this hotel. I can’t forget about that roof top because it really brings in peace and sunshine into your vacation. I will recommend coming here if you like old fashioned environments. It’s also close by to everything.

Hotel was perfect. It smelled clean and had everything I needed. It is very central to all the SD night life. Parking is cheaper here than most other lots and hotels. The hotel has a very old/classic style that is very unique. Even the elevator is over 100 years old! Will probably return.

It's definitely historic. The first room we stayed in had a view of a brick wall and a shower shaped like a tube. You're best bet was to throw some soap on yourself and hope the running water made it hit all the important parts. The second room had a nice street view… of construction. I knew there was a reason for the earplugs. But, it was cheap as hell and the beds were comfortable, so it's worth the value if that's what you're after. And, the elevators are the original cars from 1913, in which year they were the fastest elevators in the world. So that's kind of cool, too. You can order room service from the restaurant next door, but it's quite pricey. I'd probably stay here again, especially for the location and price.

It was a decent little place as a lone traveler — close to lots of activity. Room was smaller than expected but, comfortable for 1-2 people. Bed was better than expected. Wouldn’t recommend with kids.

People complaing about this hotel don't understand this hotel is more of a historic experience. If you want a 4-5 star hotel the book one next time. I did my research before arriving in San Diego from LA and I came to this hotel to experience a historic hotel. The elevator is just as it was first built. We booked a room in the top floor was very spacious. Rooms below decrease in size the lower you are to check in. Roof top was the best part of our stay. I was able to take beautiful pictures.

It's nice but very old. The building is old, the elevator is old, the feel of the hotel is old. They renovated it as best they can. Great bed. Very small rooms, bathroom and shower. 24 hours restaurant and room service! Good perk.

It is a good hotel, a little different from the area around as this is located in an old building, and they still maintain the original elevators of 1912 (or at least the speed of ascent and appearance). The rooms are clean, the biggest disadvantage being the situation with the elevators that are a little reduced of space and slower than going up the stairs. There are only showers in the bathrooms and refrigeration window, which makes it harder to find a good temperature for the room. On the good side there is a safe for your stuff and coffee maker. The building is interesting and very nice despite being so old, it is a good option if you do not plan to spend much but still want to be close to downtown San Diego.

I love, love, love this hotel! My oldest son and I went to San Diego to see my youngest son graduate from the Marine corp. I can not speak highly enough of our time there. Every single person was genuinely nice — not because they had to… it was just their nature. I loved the old school elevator! And the rooms were great! The bed and pillows were like sleeping in a dream. I can't thank Sydney, Freddy, Liz and Katheryn (and others but forgot names) enough for their hospitality. I'm already planning a trip to go back in April. Thank you all so much for making this trip such a memorable experience. It was truly a blessing!

We spent a 3 day at the hotel. Its old but clean. The elevators are very old school but efficient. We are timeshare people so staying in a hotel doesn't happen two often. I would go back. Be sure to eat at the restaurant and if you are hungry try the massive burrito. It is hug. Location is great plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Light rail is close too.

The room wasn't too big and unfortunately no window could let you get a bit of a sight of San Diego — one was wall up and the other overlooked the inside of the building. However the stay was good, very smooth check in and check out procedures, thumbs up for the valet parking as there's little place to park in the centre of San Diego. Very good place to enjoy the heart of the city if you're staying very little time.

Old school hotel. Very different. Built in 1914 but still has everything a hotel needs. Restaurant in hotel is pricey but the food is worth it. Recommend it for couples but not for young groups of friends. It is close to a lot of good bars and clubs.

For the location of the hotel I really cannot complain but the rooms are small, yet cozy. AC worked very well and overhead fan as well. Room comes with 2 large bottles of water, nice addition. Shower and restroom is small but clean and enough space to handle your business. There is a Valet option for $37/night. Good deal because you cannot park overnight anywhere near the hotel. Look for a moderate deal and this hotel is worth it.

What a cool hotel! There is such an old rustic vibe going on. The sinks were really cool and in what a good location. I would recommend it to anybody staying in Gaslamp.

We did not stay here but we checked it out as it is famous. It is a cool old hotel. The rooms looked small but it is in a great location. The roof top deck is great and check out the crazy old elevator… worked fine but we took the stairs on the way down.

Nice overall hotel. However the rooms definitely need a modern update grossly for the price. Very comfortable bed and pillows. Very kind and helpful front desk (Ian)

The rooms aren't the nicest rooms in the world but it's relatively cheap in my opinion. One of the door locks is broken and didn't lock. Overall lots of things are broken and two extremely slow elevators that are very small. Not the best hotel, still enjoyed my stay. Might not be worth staying here for most people though.

The hotel itself is nice, cleanly kept, and looked great both inside and out. The valet staff were very nice as well. The front desk staff were a little cold and distant however, they felt kind of impatient and didn't seem to want to engage in brief conversation. It wasn't a trip ruining experience, but I definitely feel it needs to be noted.

There's something nostalgic about the old St. James Hotel. The voice of Frank Sinatra will softly welcome you into this portal to another era. There's a plaque near the elevators that reads, "These twin elevators were once the fastest in the world. People came from all over Southern California to marvel at their swiftness. Today the elevators still run at the same speed. The world, on the other hand, seems to be going a lot faster. " To me, this plaque is a perfect metaphor for the hotel as a whole. Also, there is a rooftop lounging area accessible by all guests, and it provides incredible views of the San Diego skyline in every direction. No, this isn't the fanciest hotel in San Diego, but perhaps it was at one point in time, and the hotel is still in excellent shape and very well maintained. If you're like me, you will appreciate this place as a reminder of a simpler time. A time before cell phones, tablets, Facebook or Twitter. A time when socializing was done in person, maybe over a cocktail at the downstairs bar (open 24/7), or perhaps at the rooftop lounge, relaxing as you catch the last few rays provided by the beautiful sunny Califirnia Sky.

I do like this hotel, don't get me wrong but they're a star away from 4 stars because I get the sense that the management/staff doesn't take too much pride in the cleanliness and general functioning of the hotel. The staff is nice and polite but the place could be a lot cleaner. The carpet for example has a waxy dirty feel and I didn't feel comfortable walking on it barefoot. And the bathroom is a little dorm-y. The oldness of the hotel has it's charm which I enjoyed but it's not for everyone. The elevator and rooms are very small and it's not luxurious by any means (single Queen room). The elevator was fun and vintage for me but I see how someone who prefers creature comforts and amenities would not be a fan. Location is top notch and its pretty affordable but that's your trade off for tiny, and not super clean. The old historic feel could be seen as a positive or negative depending on the person.

When checking in with my bag the big black security guy at the front door says we can't unload our stuff in front of the 10 min loading zone. He was very rude to my wife and said he's calling the cops if we don't move! My wife is from South Africa and is also black. This guy is rude every time we go back to our room. He has no customer service skills and need to be replaced! ASAP.

Please, please keep an open mind and remember this a historic hotel! This is truly a place where your own attitude can make or break your satisfaction. Ceiling tiles, crown molding, chandeliers, not to mention wonderful staff and cleanliness, all make a stay here charming and enjoyable. The view from the roof is SPECTACULAR! Our small single room accommodated myself and my 6 1/2 ft husband quite well (historic = high ceilings which balances the small sq footage so it doesn't feel cramped). And yes, this is in the Gaslamp District, so if you're not into, historical perspective, high energy locations and the sound of a mosquito wakes you, find another hotel and save your bad review for more legitimate issues. :)

The room was quaint. Spectacular view from the rooftop. The housekeeping was very attentive. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Ramada for Christmas.

No Wi-Fi Does not come with breakfast! That was one of the reasons we stay at ramadas, was a very big letdown calling in the morning and finding out we payed over $100 for a small ass room with no breakfast available.

I stayed here four nights for a conference. The hotel is old, but my room was cleaned and bed made up every day. The room was a bit small, totally comfortable for one person but two might be challenging. The old elevator can be slow and challenging to get into with lots in your hands, but is a talking point with everyone you meet. The bed was SO COMFORTABLE, better than a friend's who was at the Marriott. The location is great, close to everything, short walk to the convention center. The roof was really cool, and the staff were very helpful. The only downside was the spotty internet service. Sometimes could not get the Wi-Fi to work, no matter who I called or what I tried. So if you don't critically need the internet its great!

I stayed last year after a cruise out of long beach. I looked at the reviews before hand and had an idea of what to expect. What I did not expect is an amazing rooftop with an awesome view and refreshing cool. The room is beyond small, not recommended with children or for those that want to hang out in your room. This is a historical building in an excellent location for 40-80 % cheaper than most hotels in the area… Consider that when you are shopping. I thought the hotel was cool and neat, others obviously had greater expectations, or received bad service. The breakfast burrito was 16.00 and worth every penny. It is large enough for 2-3 people.
